7/18/2003      WCRE Receives Key to the City    (WCRE Radio)

Cheraw Mayor Andy Ingram presented WCRE’s Mitch Johnson and Jane Pigg the Key to the City in recognition and appreciation for WCRE’s 50 years of constant service to the citizens of Cheraw. In presenting the Key the Mayor said, “WCRE has meant a lot to this community over these years. You’ve been the biggest and greatest promoter of Cheraw that I know. When we’ve had an event you’ve been there. When a church or civic organization was having a fundraiser you put it over the airwaves to let the people know. I can remember the evening of Hugo, ya’ll were on the air. I was lying in bed with one of my daughters, and had the radio, you know, to my ear, and keeping people informed of that tragic evening. But I just can’t say enough, and can’t thank WCRE enough for what you’ve done for this community and what you mean to this community. You have been our biggest promoter.” I, on behalf of the town council and myself wanted to come out here this morning (during your 50th Anniversary celebration) and give you special thanks. This is probably the highest honor that I can bestow on anyone in the community for what you’ve done. I want to present this to you on behalf of the town of Cheraw. It’s the key to the city. It’s an honor and I hope you receive that as an honor. This is the third time since I’ve been mayor in 10 years (to present the Key to the City) and you have been great ambassadors to our community. You’ve been great promoters to the community. Not only do I thank you for what you do, but I hope I can speak for the entire community for what you have done over the last 50 years. We appreciate your presence and we appreciate you being here,” The Key was presented live on air during the special 50th Anniversary broadcast of “The Mitch and Jane Morning Show” on July 17th. “It’s the only time I’ve ever seen Mitch speechless,” said Jane Pigg of her Co-host. “We are so flattered to receive this honor. We work constantly to better serve our community. We are proud to be the voice of Cheraw 24-7. Every time we turn on our microphone, we are promoting our area. We appreciate our listeners and we appreciate our advertisers. We especially appreciate our advertisers because without them, we would not be able to serve the community to the extent that we do.” Mitch Johnson said, “This is one of the biggest broadcasting honors I’ve ever received. We are simply attempting to carry on the tradition of 50 years of broadcast excellence.” Dwight Johnson added, “Many prominent broadcasters began their careers or worked at WCRE over the past 50 years including station owners Jim Clark and Donnie Goodale. One of South Carolina’s most well known media personalities, David Stanton of WIS-TV in Columbia, had his first broadcast job at WCRE.” WCRE broadcasts a mix of Oldies music from the 50’s 60’s and 70’s with Jerry Hardison’s Sunday Morning Gospel music, extensive local, state and national news, weather, sports, Cheraw Braves football games and public service information 24 hours a day. WCRE was recently named one of two finalists for the most prestigious honor in the station, South Carolina Radio Station of the Year.
